Cruciform Yggdrasil: The tree around which the world turns
Demon knights, that's what Merlin called them. He had just woken up from a dream, or a vision, a convulsion (maybe all three). He had seen Merlin, who told him of his past, present, and possible future. He was a dying lad, given to drink of the Holy Grail itself, a gold overlaid clay chalice formed from the cup our Lord drank from, and which (according to the comic) collected his blood. To drink from it is to gain immortality, and he had drank from it. He now seeks the chalice once more, with an inner conviction that this must be his destiny.
The person mentioned is called Sir Ystin, the "Shining Knight". The scene described is from the comic series Demon Knights. I recently started rereading it, and I have to say it's still as good as when I first read it.
There's something interesting about this particular scene though. Something Merlin said:
He is having this vision "outside" time, where every time is the same "time". The scene where he drinks of the one crucified on a tree (Christ's Holy Grail) is the same "time" he drinks of the roots of the cosmic tree (Yggdrasil). The Eucharist overtones are clear, but also the Genesis overtones, the tree of Life gives him life and he can now truly "see", unlike the other "sight" gained by the tree of Knowledge (as Adam and Eve find out). The "Shining Knight" is immersed, baptised in death and brought back with new life with a new quest, which is our quest: To find and partake even more of this new, everlasting life.
